Dhyan Chand, known as “The Wizard” for his astonishing control over the hockey ball. People of that time often used to describe him stating that “there are two sorts of players in the world; one is Dhyan Chand and other is the rest”. Such was his charisma which he created in the hearts of people with his game. His 3 gold medals in the Olympic Games was one of his greatest achievements. It was him and his captaincy that India was considered as one of the most dominating hockey team of the entire world. Scoring 400 goals is not an easy task and it was only a player like Dhyan Chand that could have achieved this feat.

Indians now also consider him as the greatest sportsperson of all time. His glorious career was so majestic that his birthday is celebrated as the National Sports Day in India. He was awarded as the Gem of India award in the year 2012. Other honors that he earned were Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, Arjuna award, and Dronacharya Award. After the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics, when the Indian hockey team returned back to India after wining gold, a newspaper report said “This is not a game of hockey, but magic. Dhyan Chand is in fact the magician of hockey.” Such magic could be created by Dhyan Chand only. This tells us about the personality and immense support that he received though his game.
